  Travel and Planning
Want to find the Kalymnos holiday at the time and price you prefer? We frequently hear of would-be visitors who are told by travel agents that there are no holidays available in Kalymnos - and yet apartment and hotel owners have empty beds. If you prefer a package, try contacting the tour operators direct either by phone or through their websites (some only sell direct to the public) or search holiday sites for avavailability.

Want to go it alone? The whole process need not be daunting and you have freedom of choice and movement. Here's a step-by-step guide.
- Find a flight. Charter flights direct to Kos are widely available for one, two or three weeks - sometimes at bargain prices. At times it may be cheaper to book a holiday in Kos and just tell the rep on arrival that you won't be using the accommodation.
- On arrival at Kos airport, you may find a taxi waiting outside to go to the port of Mastihari. If not, buy a phonecard or use your credit card to call the taxi station on (22420) 22777 or 23333. The fare to Mastihari is about 10 euros, extra for luggage and night journeys. The trip takes about 10 minutes.
- From Mastihari, take the Apollon or Atromitos ferry to Pothia. There are three ferries every day. Tickets can be bought at the office by the roundabout or the kiosk close to the boat and are inexpensive.
- In Pothia, taxis meet the ferries or you can call ahead to the Kalymnos taxi station on 22430 50300 to arrange for a car to meet you and take you to your accommodation.
Planning
- Kalymnos is a great place for a holiday. An island that is really Greek, but quickly feels like home. You'll want to come back!
- The holiday season starts in late April/early May, peaks around mid August and ends in October. Late October is the quietest time.
- You'll always find somewhere to stay - and even in August the resorts aren't uncomfortably crowded.
- The availability of flights is less certain. It's wise to book ahead.
- Most people stay in the coastal resorts and villages – Massouri and Myrties.
- Looking for total peace? Try lovely Emporios in the north-west or take the five minute boat ride from Myrties to Telendos. Just ask for a studio, unpack your bags and unwind.
- What to bring? Most things can be bought here (see Shopping) but you might want to pack sun cream, mosquito repellent and books in your own language. Bring a Greek phrase book if you're keen – but you won't really need it.
- Don't forget your passport, tickets and – from EU countries – papers for reciprocal medical treatment.
- Can you drink the water? Actually, no. It's clean but salty. Bottled water is everywhere and costs very little.
